Lewes Town & Rural Neighbourhood Watch Association

Evaluation Report September 07 - September 08

The objectives of the association are to:

  • Support local coordinators and others involved in Neighbourhood Watch
  • Help recruit new members and establish new schemes
  • Liaise with the police

This third report reflects on progress made on these objectives and to look to future work planned or required to further achieve our objectives.

Support local coordinators and others involved in neigbourhood watch

Progress this year

  1. Coordinators' meeting on the topic of working with PCSOs

2.      Updated records of all schemes and produced statistics about our coverage. Currently, the number of houses covered is 3651 out of a total of 16315 giving a 22% coverage but within the district the coverage ranges from 59% on the Malling estate in Lewes to 7% in Wivelsfield. Each month we distribute 2165 paper copies of the newsletter, the rest going by email.

Further work

  1. Review the content and purpose of the website

Help recruit new members and establish new schemes

Progress this year

1.      On 29th October, the chair was interviewed on Rocket FM about the work of the Association

2.      The association had a stand at the Lewes Societies Fair on 12 July 2008

3.      Six new schemes were established in Lewes town during the year and a number of new coordinators we recruited for existing schemes

Further work

  1. Identify areas in the district which need further support to recruit members and coordinators

Liaise with the police

Progress this year

  1. Establishment of a trained team of volunteers to assist police with searches for missing persons. To support this work the police made a grant of £3000 to the Association. 107 people have indicated their willingness to assist and some 60 have undergone some form of training. Whilst out on a training exercise a call came from the police for volunteers to carry out a search for a missing person in East Sussex and all those from our group agreed to assist. After a search through woods the missing person was found by our group; unfortunately the person had committed suicide.

Further work

1. The association needs to encourage the police to ensure PCSOs keep in contact with coordinators.

2. Continue to train the search team volunteers
