So what’s been happening on Lewes District over the last month …..

A vigilant member of the public helped us to catch a couple of young burglars (15 and 16 years old) at Ringmer Community College . By ringing us quickly to say that they had seen some youths in the grounds of the school we were able to catch them …..the 15 year old received a reprimand and the 16 year old is still subject of an investigation.

Of course we are not always so fortunate ….you’ll  recall the high value burglary at Firle Place last year we are still looking at various lines of enquiry….it should feature on  BBC1 Crimewatch on 16 June.

The warm weather is coming and we don’t want you to suffer from the trauma of becoming a victim of burglary so a couple of leaflets give really good practical advice. ‘Keep Cool This Summer’ leaflets are available across Sussex and can also be downloaded from the Sussex Police web-site – www.sussex.police.uk

It’s been a busy month on District for specific targeted activity. We are working with our colleagues on Roads Policing to heighten awareness around drink driving.  Patrick O’Gorman knows we wont tolerate it as he was arrested for failing to provide a specimen of breath and is due in Court this month.  Sarah Banbury was also arrested and has been to Court and received 25 month disqualification, 12 months Community Order, 80hrs Unpaid Work, and £85 Costs.

If you know of a worthy cause that could do with some unpaid work then through our partnership working we consider where our offenders who have been given Community Orders will carry out their work.  If you would like to nominate a project to be assessed for inclusion in the scheme please contact Louisa Young on 01273 484394 or louisa.young@lewes.gov.uk

I have had some great feedback from residents in Newhaven regarding our new multi-agency campaign …Operation Involve ….A new ‘One Street a month’, campaign which aims to help one or two streets at a time to receive special attention and advice. Representatives from Sussex Police, Environmental Health and the Youth Development Service to name but a few were involved to offer advice and host activities throughout the day. One resident reported “I feel more confident about who to contact if I have problem”.  6 July will see the next one in the DeMontfort estate in Lewes.

I am delighted to advise that we have recently been able to approve and provide several charity donations from the Sussex Police Property Fund to Lewes Rugby Club (£600), Laughton Cricket Club (£500), Chyngton Primary School  (£600)and Newhaven Archery Club (£630). All four recipients will be using the funds to enhance facilities provided by them to the community.

Chief Superintendent Robin Smith is holding another of his Virtual Town Hall events at the County Council  Office in Lewes on Thursday 17 June……why not join in …online ……. http://www.sussex.police.uk/news_feed/index.asp?id=31014

All being well 6 July ought to be a memorable date for those on DeMontfort ..I also hope to have a good day ....I get married!! I''ll be off for a month and Charlie Connaughton will ''look after'' the District whilst I am away .....see you in August.
