A message from the District Commander – Chief Inspector Natalie Carron:

“A vigilant member of the public helped us to catch a couple of young burglars (15 and 16 years old) at Ringmer Community College. By ringing us quickly to say that they had seen some youths in the grounds of the school we were able to catch them …..the 15 year old received a reprimand and the 16 year old is still subject of an investigation.

Of course we are not always so fortunate ….you’ll recall the high value burglary at Firle Place last year we are still looking at various lines of enquiry….it should feature on the BBC1 Crimewatch on 16 June.

The warm weather is coming and we don’t want you to suffer from the trauma of becoming a victim of burglary so a couple of leaflets give really good practical advice. ‘Keep Cool This Summer’ leaflets are available across Sussex and can also be downloaded from the Sussex Police web-site

 www.sussex.police.uk/ community_safety/keepcool.asp

It’s been a busy month on District for specific targeted activity. We are working with our colleagues on Roads Policing to heighten awareness around drink driving. Patrick O’Gorman knows we won’t tolerate it as he was arrested for failing to provide a specimen of breath and is due in Court this month. Sarah Banbury was also arrested and has been to Court and received 25 month disqualification, 12 months Community Order, 80hrs unpaid Work, and £85 Costs.

If you know of a worthy cause that could do with some unpaid work then through our partnership working, we consider where our offenders who have been given Community Orders will carry out their work. If you would like to nominate a project to be assessed for inclusion in the scheme please contact Louisa Young on 01273 484394 or louisa.young@lewes.gov.uk

I have had some great feedback from residents in Newhaven regarding our new multi-agency campaign …Operation Involve ….a new ‘One Street a month’ campaign which aims to provide proactive partnership intervention in one or two streets within an area of the District during the course of one specific day. Representatives from Sussex Police, Environmental Health and the Youth Development Service, to name but a few, were involved to offer advice and host activities throughout the day. One resident reported “I feel more confident about who to contact if I have problem”. 6 July will see the next one in the DeMontfort estate in Lewes. More information will be circulated soon.

I am delighted to advise that we have recently been able to approve and provide several charity donations from the Sussex Police Property Fund to Lewes Rugby Club (£600) and Laughton Cricket Club (£500), The recipients will be using the funds to enhance facilities provided by them to the community. If you have a worthy charity that you feel could do with some financial support then please approach your local Officer.

Our performance this month – compared to the same period last year:

All crime                                    DOWN 10% 498 fewer victims

House Burglary                          DOWN 37% 75 fewer victims

Theft from a Vehicle                  DOWN 32% 152 fewer victims

Violent crime in a public place  DOWN 7% 36 fewer victims

Shoplifting                                 DOWN 20% 69 fewer victims

If you have ideas as to how we can improve our service or want to talk to me about anything raised in this message please feel free to contact me by E-Mail (Natalie.carron@sussex.pnn.police.uk) or ring me on 01273 665964.”

The Big Lunch

Imagine a summer’s day on which millions of us, throughout the UK, sit down to have lunch together – in the middle of our streets, around tower blocks and on every patch of common ground. It’s called The Big Lunch and it is taking place on Sunday 18th July.

The Big Lunch happened for the first time in 2009, and was a huge success. There were over 8000 lunches involving almost 1 million people. People came together to grow vegetables, cook food, make music, decorate their streets and entertain each other with street theatre or competitions.

We want The Big Lunch to be even bigger this year and we need your help to encourage as many people as possible in your community to get involved. There are a number of ways that you can incorporate The Big Lunch into your work.

It is a great opportunity to:

• Strengthen communities and encourage social cohesion

• Promote intergenerational and interfaith contact

• Get children and young people engaged in community focused activity

• Showcase local talent

• Highlight your own community projects

If you would like any further information or advice please visit www.thebiglunch.com or contact them on 020 7307 3140 or email kate.groves@thebiglunch.com

CRIMESTOPPERS

Lewes District CSP has supported the work of Crimestoppers by both highlighting its effectiveness in our newsletter and by providing funding.

Crimestoppers is an independent charity helping to find criminals and solve crime and is independent of the Police and Government. Following our closer involvement in their work the charity has seen a huge increase in the number of `actionable calls’ from the public across the District, with an 85% increase compared to the previous year.

Local Authority representative for the Partnership, Councillor Carla Butler said, “I am delighted that the community has got behind Crimestoppers to give information about what little crime we have. The crime rate across the District is very low and the Partnership is working hard to keep it that way to make Lewes District a safer place to live, work and visit.”

You can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Crimestoppers operates across the UK. The phone number provides an invaluable community service, so that anybody who has information about criminal activity can pass it on, without living in fear of the consequences. Many criminals exploit people's fear to avoid arrest. Every call is treated with absolute anonymity so that nobody will know the identity of the caller, except you, the caller.

Rewards are also available and are paid without compromising a caller's anonymity. The information you give is passed onto the police in such a way that they do not know who you are. Crimestoppers has never given the police information about callers. It's a simple and secure way of bringing criminals to justice, without anybody knowing who the information came from.

The 0800 555 111 phone number has been helping to find criminals and solve crimes for 21 years. It's a system that works for everyone – except criminals.

The World Cup

Four eye-catching images made into beer mats and posters, and a handy credit card-sized World Cup fixtures charts are available free of charge throughout the District as part of a county-wide ‘Watch Enjoy Remember’ campaign.

The Community Safety Partnership worked with other East Sussex Safer Communities Partnership members including Sussex Police, the South Downs & Weald NHS and the other district community safety partnerships on the ‘Watch Enjoy Remember’ campaign, which received a grant from the Centre for Public Innovation following a bid submitted by the East Sussex Safer Communities Partnership.

Chair of the Partnership and Police District Commander Chief Inspector Natalie Carron said, “We want everyone to have fun watching England, enjoying the World Cup and remembering those great moments that make World Cups so thrilling. Our message is to drink in moderation and don’t allow your drinking to spoil the memory.”

For more information about the World Cup communications campaign and to win sports vouchers, visit the ‘Watch Enjoy Remember’ Facebook page.
