SEARCH TEAMS TO SUPPORT POLICE
SEE ALSO UPDATE UNDER 'POLICE BULLETINS' - May 2008
Members of neighbourhood watch schemes are being invited to volunteer to form a search team to assist police in the event of a person being missing and a large scale search becoming necessary. The following is a copy of a letter from the Chairman of the Lewes Town and Rural Neighbourhood Watch Association delivered to members of watch schemes:-
Dear NW member When the police are faced with a missing person situation, there is sometimes a need to establish a large-scale search operation. In other parts of Sussex, neighbourhood watch have established volunteer search teams to assist the police in carrying out such searches. This has a number of advantages. It reduces the demands on police time, uses people who have been trained to search (most police are not so trained, so using trained volunteers produces a better search team), and it draws on public support for the police.
The Association is seeking to establish a search team based in East Sussex and the purpose of this note is to ask you if you would be interested in joining such a team. You would need to commit time to attend a short training course and then be willing to be called up if your services are needed. Obviously you may not be available every time there is a need to establish a search team, and indeed, the frequency of such calls is not high and you may go for months without a call. You would need to be able to walk over rough ground and be moderately fit. Transport would be provided and the police have an insurance scheme in place to provide cover for you.
If you are interested in joining such a scheme or need more information please contact me by email, phone or letter. I do hope you will sign up for this scheme Best wishes
